Density-Based Freight Class Guide

Density is one factor in freight classification. Handling, stowability, liability and the assigned NMFC commodity item can change the official class.

Incoterms 2020

Use Incoterms to identify delivery point, cost responsibility and transfer of risk. Confirm the exact named place in the sales contract.

Transit Time Planning

Allow time for pickup, terminal handling, linehaul, customs clearance, appointment delivery and possible inspections.

Packaging Guidance

Use outside dimensions, include pallet overhang and protect corners, voids and fragile surfaces for the selected mode.

Air vs. Ocean

Air freight favors speed and lower-volume urgent cargo. Ocean freight favors larger volumes where transit time is less critical.

LTL vs. FTL

LTL shares trailer capacity and may involve terminal transfers. FTL dedicates the trailer and generally reduces handling.

Cross Dock Planning

Provide arrival windows, piece counts, dimensions, outbound instructions and exception contacts before the truck reaches the dock.

How to Use Freight Calculators Correctly

Measure the shipment, not only the product

Carrier calculations should use the maximum outside dimensions of the packaged freight. Include the pallet, protective materials, strapping, overhang and any non-stackable space that the carrier must preserve. A small measurement difference can materially change cubic volume and dimensional weight.

Understand chargeable weight

Parcel and air carriers often compare actual weight with dimensional weight and charge the greater amount. The divisor and rounding method vary by carrier, account and service. Always confirm the current tariff before relying on an estimate.

Treat freight class as an estimate

Density-based class calculators are useful planning tools, but the official NMFC item can consider handling, stowability and liability in addition to density. A classification error can create reclassification charges and delays.

Use capacity calculators conservatively

Container and pallet utilization depends on carton orientation, weight distribution, door clearance, bracing, mixed SKUs and loading equipment. The calculator provides a planning estimate, not a loading guarantee.

Resource Center FAQs

Are these official carrier quotes?

No. They are planning tools. Final charges depend on carrier rules, tariffs, account pricing, accessorials and shipment conditions.

Should I include the pallet in my dimensions?

Yes. Use the maximum outside dimensions of the complete handling unit, including pallet, overhang and packaging.

Does density always determine freight class?

No. Official classification may also consider handling, stowability, liability and the assigned NMFC commodity item.

Which dimensional divisor should I use?

Use the divisor published for the specific carrier, account and service. Common examples are 139 and 166.

Are container-capacity results guaranteed?

No. Actual loading depends on carton orientation, mixed cargo, weight limits, blocking, bracing and operational clearance.
